The rusty colour of naturally aged coreten steel is beautiful and shows off the inherent qualities of this material. A stable rust layer or patina forms on the outer surface of the coreten steel, via exposure to the elements. It protects the metal from further corrosion and eliminates the need for painting and extra care. Likewise scorched cedar, produced via the Japanese method, Shou Sugi Ban, enhances the longevity of the timber by creating a charcoal surface that is waterproof, doesn’t require painting and is more resistant to fire and insect attack. What would appear at first glance to be a degradation of these materials, actually improves their longevity. What great resilience!
